Building collapse: SON plans clamp down on manufacturers of sub-standard materials

Worried by the incidences of collapsed buildings in the country, especially in Abuja, the nation’s capital, the Standard Organization of Nigeria, SON, has vowed to clamp down on the manufacturers of sub-standard building materials.

To this end, the SON has commenced quality tests of building materials, especially on iron rods and as well collection of details of their manufacturers with a viewing to summoning producers of identified sub-standard ones for questioning or arrest,

Some staff of the organisation in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT,;weekend, commenced sensitisation visit to dealers of the products before taking measures against the manufacturers.

The first points of call by the SON team was in Jabi, Lugbe and other building material markets within the capital territory

After meeting with the dealers to educate them of their mission, the technical team also took time to identify the quality of the steel rods and the manufacturers of the products

An Assistant Director of SON, Dr Barth Okoko, who led the team on the operation explained that “The awareness drive was necessary to educate the dealers on engineering procedures of identifying quality of the products”

Dr Okoko who is also the head of Abuja office of SON hinted that “We need to do this before meeting the manufacturers and draw their attention to the effects of the sub-standard products in the building and construction sector
