13-year-old charged with throwing rock at police officer

A 13-year-old New Jersey girl has been arrested and charged with throwing a rock that struck a Clifton police officer in the face in June.

The juvenile from Passaic was arrested on Monday night and charged with aggravated assault, inciting a riot, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon, said Clifton Police Department spokesman Lt. Robert Bracken.

The girl's name was not released by police due to her age.

Bracken said an investigation as well as a tip from a member of the public within the past few days led to the arrest and charges against the girl.

An unnamed Clifton police sergeant was injured by the rock thrown at his face as he responded to a domestic violence dispute on June 25.

At the scene on June 25, Clifton police officers as well as Passaic police officers, found a "belligerent" 19-year-old man standing on the roof of a car, said Bracken.

While officers were dealing with the 19-year-old during the initial incident, a crowd gathered in the area and someone from the crowd threw a rock that hit the sergeant in the face, Bracken said.

The sergeant "suffered facial lacerations, bruising and swelling," Bracken said, adding he was out of work for a few days but is now back on the job.

The teen suspect appeared before a family court judge and currently remains at home with a monitoring bracelet, Bracken said.

Asked whether the rock was thrown with the intention to hit the officer, Bracken said "this act was intentional."

Bracken would not comment on whether the girl was connected to the original domestic violence dispute.

Asked how the injured sergeant reacted to the news that a 13-year-old girl was charged with throwing the rock, Bracken said: "I think everyone was shocked to learn of her age."
