Former Ohio congressman dies

Former U.S. Rep. Steven LaTourette, R-Ohio, has died at age 62.

Dino Disanto, chief of staff for U.S. Rep. David Joyce, confirmed LaTourette's death Wednesday night. Disanto also served on LaTourette's staff.

LaTourette had battled pancreatic cancer.

A Republican, LaTourette was elected to Congress from Ohio's 19th District in 1994 and was re-elected three times. Before the 2002 election, LaTourette's district was renumbered to the 14th District, where he served the Cleveland suburbs until 2013.

LaTourette did not seek re-election in 2012 because of frustrations he had with Congress.

And he didn't hold back when it came to assessing what went wrong for the Republicans in that election.

"We have the right message on the finances," LaTourette said on CNN's Starting Point. "We have to get out of people's lives, get out of people's bedrooms and we have to be a national party, or else we're going to lose."

Exit polls then showed President Obama's re-election was delivered through the votes of young people, minorities and women. LaTourette says the nation's red-blue map, showing the states that voted for Obama and Mitt Romney, pointed to a larger problem for the GOP.

"The Republican Party cannot be a national party if we give up the entire East Coast of the United States," LaTourette said.

He endorsed Ohio Gov. John Kasich in the 2016 presidential primaries.
