Nigerian Army to probe killing of footballer by troop

Nigerian army has ordered a full scale investigation into circumstances that resulted in the killing of a footballer, Mr Joseph Izu on Sunday by soldiers on confidence building patrol in Okarki, Akinima, Ahoada West local government area, Rivers state.

Commander 2 Brigade, Port Harcourt, Brigadier General Hassan Hamisu who spoke to newsmen last night on the incident said the footballer who was with 3SC shooting stars of Ibadan was allegedly found around a cult shrine raided by his men.

He said the essence of the investigation being conducted by the army was to determine what the deceased was doing at the alleged cult shrine.

“Information available to the patrolling troops indicated the presence of suspected cultists in Okarki villages. The troops moved in and raided the suspected criminal hideout. One person lost his life at the hideout while several others fled.

Later it was confirmed that the person who lost his life was was a Nigerian footballer , identified as Mr Izu Joseph. Investigation is ongoing to further determine why and what he was doing at the cultists shrine at thst time “, he said.

Meantime, father of the deceased, Mr Reuben Izu insisted his son was murdered in cold blood by the soldiers.

According to him, he was not near any cultists operated areas, stressing that his son went to swim before he was shot dead.
