MANGO
                The Mango is a juicy stone fruit (drupe) belonging to the genus Mangifera, consisting of numerous tropical fruiting trees, cultivated mostly for edible fruits. Mangoes are generally sweet, although the taste and texture of the flesh varies across cultivars; some have a soft, pulpy texture similar to an overripe plum, while others are firmer, like a cantaloupe or avocado, and some may have a fibrous texture. The skin of unripe, pickled, or cooked mango can be consumed, but has the potential to cause contact dermatitis of the lips, gingival, or tongue in susceptible people.
                The energy value per 100g(3.5oz) serving of the common mango is 25okj(60kcal). Fresh mango contains a variety of nutrients, but only vitamin C and folate are in significant amounts of about 44% and 11%, respectively. Mangoes provides wholesome nourishment to the body because they are rich in sugar, vitamins A, C. Mangoes are known to be laxatives and diuretics.
                Below are reasons why you should not go a day without eating the mango fruit:
1.       Lower cholesterol: The African mango in particular has been tested and proven to be helpful in cases of obesity. It reduces high level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Experts say that mangoes have a low glycemic index. That’s why it is good for weight loss programs.
2.       Hearth Health: The mango fruit helps to maintain the normal blood pressure and heart rate. Thus helps to check and lessen chances of developing heart diseases like stroke. Mango juice contains potassium which helps the heart, nerves and muscles to function properly.
3.       Aids Digestion: The rich fibre content of the mango fruit help foster digestion. In other words it prevents constipation.
4.       Normalizes Insulin (Diabetes): Mango help normalize insulin levels. The dika nut helps to reduce blood sugar levels thus it may also help to alleviate cases of Type 2 diabetes. Ripe mangoes however have significant natural sugar content. So it is advice that diabetic patient should consult a doctor.
5.       Healthy Eyes and Bones: Mango contain vitamin A which supports healthy eyes and proper bone growth. 1 mango fruit provide about 35% of the daily vitamin A requirements. Though in a low quantity, mango contains calcium which is good for strong bones and skeletal health.
6.       Good for the Skin: It also contains beta-carotene which works hand in hand with vitamin A. Together, they improve and clear the skin of acnes. According to the National Institutes of Health, beta-carotene is effective in the prevention of certain cancers, high blood pressure, infertility, heartburn and emotional/mental disorders.
7.        Anaemic conditions: Present as well in mangoes are folic acid which are used to treat megaloblastic anaemia. For pregnant women, it helps to prevent miscarriages and birth defects of the brain and spine (neural tube defects). Mangoes help in cleansing the blood. The iron content of the mango fruit helps in the production of healthy red blood cells which transport oxygen throughout the body.
8.       Energy: Mangoes have high natural sugar content. When metabolized into glucose it’s used for powering the brain and central nervous system. It has also been found that the mango seed contains healthy fats such as myristic, lauric, palmitic, stearic and oleic acids. These fatty acids are essential for brain health, body function and muscular development.
9.       Fights Cancer: Mangoes contain antioxidants (such as quercetin, isoquercitrin, astragalin, fisetin, gallic acid and methylgallat) which help to protect the body systems from colon, breast, leukaemia and prostate cancers.
10.   Boosts Immunity: With the vitamin C and several Carotenoids contained in mango, the immune system is improved.
