THE House of Representative Committee on Marine Transport has disagreed with the management of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, over N1.9 trillion three percent bench mark rate paid on every ship load of cargoes that calls at the nation’s ports. While members of the committee got a figure of $10 billion, Director General of the agency, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, told the committee the figure he had was about $1.5 billion. House of Representatives The cargo dues are monies derivable from the payments of sea protection levy, two per cent Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund fee, Stevedoring fee and the three per cent benchmark rate. Speaking at a public hearing on the $10 billion debt owed NIMASA by shipping firms that evaded payments over a period of time, Peterside said the agency has concluded plans to automate its payment system to check a recurrence of non-payment of its dues and levies.
