Iniesta’s stunning strike named UEFA Champions League Goal of the Week

Andres Iniesta’s wonderful volley in Barcelona’s record 7-0 victory over Celtic has been named UEFA Champions League Goal of the Week, presented by Nissan.

The Spain star is the first to claim the honour this season by scoring a memorable goal at Camp Nou in a thumping win for the Catalans that is sure to make their European rivals sit up and take notice. Barca were already three goals to the good when the 32-year-old midfielder advanced onto a cross from Neymar to send a powerful volley into the net from just inside the penalty box.

Lionel Messi would complete a hat-trick in that encounter, Luis Suarez grabbed a late double and Neymar was also on target in what proved a footballing exhibition from the home side, yet it was the veteran midfielder’s contribution that was the most memorable.

Indeed, on a week that saw an incredible 50 goals across only 16 matches, Iniesta’s effort has been voted the outstanding goal of the competition to date and has reaffirmed Barca’s reputation as one of the most exciting teams in the world to watch.

He saw off strong competition for the award from Real Madrid hat-trick hero Cristiano Ronaldo and Champions League new boy Riyad Mahrez, who made his mark for Premier League title holders Leicester City. Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez and Monaco's Bernardo Silva were also nominated.
