Jeremy Corbyn’s dream Arsenal signings

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had reason for a double celebration over the weekend.

On Sunday he survived a coup within his own party to be re-elected as its leader ahead of Owen Smith, less than 24 hours after his beloved Arsenal hammered Chelsea 3-0 in a London derby.

Had he found himself out of a job, though, the Gunners might have done worse than to appoint him as their director of football.

Corbyn certainly seems to have a decent eye for talent. In an interview with the club’s matchday program in 2000, he revealed what players he would sign if he had £150 million to buy players for the club, which still played at Highbury at the time.

“Denilson, Lilian Thuram and JJ Okocha,” was his response.

Although Arsenal later signed a Denilson, Corbyn presumably was talking about the dashing Real Betis winger and not the raw 18-year-old, who played over 150 times for the club.

And while Okocha might never have played for the Gunners, his nephew Alex Iwobi played a starring role against the Blues last weekend.
