As the spate of criminal activities across the country heighten however, women folk have been advised to join in the battle.
Giving this advice while calling on women to join non-profit organisations such as the International Inner Wheel, wife of the governor of Lagos State, Mrs Bolanle Ambode; President, International Inner Wheel, Mrs Oluyemisi Alatise and Mrs Wemimo Olasanya, Chairperson, Inner Wheel District 911, argued that the role of women could no longer be limited to their home.
The trio spoke in Lagos at a ceremony which witnessed Olasanya’s installation ceremony as new District Chairperson to oversee Inner Wheel clubs in Lagos and Ogun states.
Ambode said: “Women can help to take criminals off the streets by guiding and empowering them to legitimately eke out a living. A right way to go about it is by teaching unemployed persons how to fish and I commend members of the International Inner Wheel for their efforts in that direction over the years.”
It would be recalled that last year, about 50 unemployed persons were trained in various vocation and empowered with start-up equipment such as laptops, professional make-up kits, refrigerator, gas cookers, shoe/bag-making machines, among others by the immediate past leadership of Inner Wheel District 911 headed by Alhaja Olayinka Ayanwale. In same spirit, newly-installed Chairperson, Olasanya, told Sunday Vanguard she would build on the achievements of her predecessor by empowering at least 50 persons with vocational skills and start-up materials, alongside executing other life-changing initiatives.
Meanwhile, in her remark, Alatise who recently became the first African to clinch the apex seat in Inner Wheel International, overseeing activities of its clubs in 103 countries, encouraged women to key into charitable activities that could transform society. She further emphasised her desire to see more African women gain both local and global recognition for their humanitarian efforts, saying, “I want other women to impact society and get both local and international recognition for their good works.
“I do not want to be the first and last African to attain the apex seat at the International Inner Wheel.”
