The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit has urged leaders in Nigeria to be transparent and accountable in governance. The Amir (President) of MSSN in Lagos State, Saheed Ashafa, said this in a congratulatory message to Muslims on the 1437AH Eid-el Fitri. Ashafa counselled both followers and leaders in Nigeria to emulate the transparent and accountable attributes of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w). The students-leader explained that Nigeria would witness tremendous growth if both leaders and followers were ready to sacrifice for the country.
He said, “We rejoice with all Muslims and thank Allah for making us to witness another Eid-el Fitri. In the spirit of celebration, it is important not to forget the essence of Eid-el Fitri, among which is sacrifice. If all and sundry adhere to the teachings and virtues of Eid-el Fitri, Nigeria won’t be in its pitiable state today. “We assert that today is another day for both leaders and followers in the country to assess how our actions and inactions have benefited or ruin our country. Like Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), we must be accountable and transparent in our dealings. Apart from being accountable on earth, we must also prepare for questioning in the hereafter.
“If truly our leaders have been accountable from inception, we will not find ourselves in a situation where many states cannot pay salaries without borrowing. It saddening that many workers are still being owed and will be constrained to celebrating Eid-el Fitri as they really wished.” Ashafa, however, preached to Muslims and non-muslims not to allow their good acts and gestures to stop with the exit of Ramadan.
Describing Ramadan period as the best in Nigeria, Ashafa added, “Both Muslims and non-Muslims should continue their kind gestures even in other months. Extending the spirit of Ramadan to other months is highly beneficial and the best for humanity. “Muslims should not relent in their acts of Ibadah. They should continue to dedicate few minutes to praying for the country to survive its trying moments on time. We wish everyone a happy celebration and urge them to celebrate in the best manners recommended by the prophet (PBUH).”
