A princely sum of N7m will be given to the winners of the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) Tennis League Cup, organisers have said.
In its second edition, the tournament which made its debut last year has seen increment in its prize money and participating teams, all making for an interesting and competitive second season.
Speaking during the official launch and draw ceremony held at the Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos, NCC said they were committed in their drive to stimulate the growth of tennis in the country by creating the avenue for players to showcase their talents as well as earn money for their efforts.
According to the NCC’s representative, Mrs Iyabo Solanke, the decision to jerk up the winners cheque from N5m to N7m was to encourage the players to go all the way to reshape their careers.
“We are conscious of what motivation does in sports and want to use this platform to encourage our players, especially the young ones, who can make something big from tennis. Tennis pays handsomely but you must be ready to pay the price to get the juicy price”, she said.
She added that the runners-up will get N5m, while the third-placed and fourth-placed sides will cart home N3m and N2m respectively.
Also speaking, founder of the International Tennis Academy, Godwin Kienka said ten teams would be gunning for the title won last year won by Team Tombim.
And the draw for the competition has placed Team Tombin in the Blue Group, comprising Offikwu, Leadway, Anambra and Team Goshens while the White Group has Civil Defence, Team FCT, Kalatari, Team Hope and CBN Futures.
In last year’s final, Abuja based Team Tombirin defeated Team Civil Defence 4-2 in the seven match championship decider with the final mixed doubles match becoming inconsequential.
Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, who assisted in the draw ceremony commended the NCC for supporting the development of tennis.
