Ahead of next weekend’s pan- Niger Delta stakeholders’ summit, the South-South Reawakening Group, SSRG, has said that the forum may not achieve the desired goal due to the presence of some persons representing the zone.
Though the group refused to mention names, it said that the same set of persons had over the years represented the Niger Delta in negotiations with nothing tangible coming to the region.
Convener of SSRG, Mr. Joseph Ambakederimo, in an interview in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, said that it will hold the Federal Government responsible if nothing tangible comes out of the new phase of dialogue.
He said: “We observe that the Federal Government may have missed the track for deciding to hold a meeting with the Pan-Niger Delta stakeholders’ forum that is due to take place anytime next week.
“Our position is borne out of the assessment of the characters and credibility of some of the persons that had put themselves forward for this meeting in the guise of naming it a pan-Niger Delta stakeholders’ forum.
“Is this the dialogue that the Niger Delta people have clamoured for all this while? If the answer is in the affirmative, the next question to ask is, what position and process have they put in place to achieve progress. When did they call a meeting of the general house comprising all ethnic nationalities to take a clear cut position to present to government? Are these the best the Niger Delta can put forward for such a critical meeting?”
