Man gets 6 months imprisonment for attempting to steal car with remote

A Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced, Matino Jang, to six months in prison for trying to steal a car with remote.

The Area Court judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, however, gave Jang an option of N50,000 fine. Kagarko said he gave the convict an option of fine because he was a first time offender. Jang of Masaka, Nasarawa State, was arraigned on a one-count charge of theft.

The Prosecutor, Patrick Ebong, told the court that Bernard John of the Nigerian Air Force in company of Bature Nicholas reported the matter at the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, FCT Command on July 1. Ebong said that Jang tried to forcefully open Nichola’s Prado jeep parked at the Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Abuja, on June 28.

He further said that Nicholas had coincidentally sent John to remove the car from where he parked it when he caught Jang in the act.

Ebong said Jang opened the car with its remote and dishonestly jumped into the car with intent to move the car when he was immediately arrested. He said that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code. Jang pleaded guilty and prayed for leniency
